Go Travel: Hermanus
Hermanus is the perfect spot to go travel for a weekend getaway.
Only ninety minutes outside of Cape Town, it’s a small town set right on the edge of the ocean and one of the best spots for whale watching in the world. From up above you can watch these massive shadows traveling through the water, and from down on the rocks you can occasionally even reach out and touch one (this has really happened). There’s a gorgeous path along the cliffs that is full of drama and giant waves.
On the other side of town is the much more subdued lagoon with a seemingly never ending beach. The mountain backdrop is full of hikes, waterfalls and funny jumping little buck. This is where I had the coolest hike of my life, complete with climbing ropes, jumping across rivers and cooling off in mountain water pools.
The town itself is laid back (very laid back – it’s one of the top retirement spots in the country). But here and there you find a good party. Gecko Bar in Hermanus’s old harbor is a local hang out where pizza is great (and half price on Sunday evenings) and the views of the sea are staggering.
Just in case you’re not convinced, here are a few pictures from my last weekend in Hermanus.
This is why I love living in the Western Cape!
This is very cool. Thanks for sharing your weekend–next best thing to being there myself!
