Go Travel: Cape Town Beach Bars
Cape Town is a young city right on the water. People there like to go to the beach. And they like to drink. So naturally there are a number of beach bars to choose from. To help you choose which one to go travel to on the next sunny afternoon here are a few pictures of one of the best beach bars in Cape Town – Moyo.
Sure, Moyo is a chain (and Cape Town is adamantly anti-chain restaurants) but it’s a cool chain. This is not the same Moyo you find in Johannesburg or even out at Spier wine farm. The Moyo in Blouberg revolves around the Cape Town lifestyle.
First of all there’s a pool; an awesome pool where you can sit around the edge and soak your feet, or hop right in and sit on one of the underwater jeweled stools. There’s even an island in the center complete with a mosaic palm tree and outdoor showers. On Sunday afternoons there’s a live DJ and the drinks are good, like really good.
Second of all there’s another pool. This one’s not as flashy or as deep but it is conveniently right under tables made from surfboards. When you’re ready for some food move to the restaurant and dangle your feet in the water underneath your table while you chow down.
Third of all, there’s the beach…and Table Mountain. This is where all those postcard pictures of the mountain are taken from. Moyo is part of the Eden on the Bay complex of restaurants that share a giant lawn in front for lying out in the sun or playing Frisbee. There’s usually some sort of kid entertainment going on, which means parents can drink up without the little brats – I mean angels – running around.
Fourth of all, there’s Blouberg, the most underrated part of Cape Town. Contrary to what the people in the center of town say, Blouberg is only a few minutes outside of downtown Cape Town. And when you’re there, there’s beach, beach, beach. Downtown Blouberg may not be much to look at but it’s fun. Really fun (more to come later – watch out the post on Cape
Town’s coolest kiting bar, Yo Mojo). Blouberg is one of the best spots in the world to kite surf. Around the corner are rock pools where the water is not quite so icy cold, and there’s a path for rollerblading and skateboarding that runs for miles, right to the front door of Moyo.
Still skeptical? Well too bad for you. That just means there’s more room at the pool for me.
What are some other Cape Town beach bars you’d recommend traveling to?

OMG, this place sounds fabulous! Are those hamster balls that the kiddies are playing in? That looks like fun for adults too!
Hi Jamie! Yes, those balls are for the special children, short adults and rodents in our lives! I may or may not have pushed small children out of the way to play with them myself. It’s an awesome excuse to get out and enjoy the sun.
Two pools at one bar? I’m in!
Haha! To be fair one is more of a foot pool, but both do a nice job of cooling you off after being out in the sun. Thanks for the comment!
Ok you may have just convinced me to drive all the way from Hout Bay to Blouberg for this place. Where is it exactly?
Hi Brenda, glad to hear! It’s worth the drive, especially since you can easily make a whole day out of it with the beach in front. Once you’re in Blouberg head down Marine drive until you hit a traffic circle, turn left and carry on until you see Eden on the Bay. If you get lost (which you might from those crap directions) you can contact Moyo at 021 554 9671. Have fun!
I have been there, it is in Big Bay. You are right it is one of the best places to hang out in Cape Town. They often have some really good DJs playing there on the weekend.
Glad you also like it. I agree that the DJs are perfect for a Sunday afternoon. Cool blog by the way! Just went on to check it out. Looks very interesting!
I was there last month and LOVED it! I don’t normally come through to that side of town but had such a stunning time I must return.
Hi Alex, I’m happy to hear what a positive impression Moyo made on you. Even though it’s technically in Big Bay (not Blouberg) that whole side of town is such a nice, chilled place to spend the weekend.
Also been here! Was really amazing.
So glad you liked it (thanks again for the amazing logo!).
Never been to this Moyo. Love the one in Durbs and Zoo Lake. Will have to check this one out next time in Cape Town.
It’s worth it! Thanks for the comment!
Is this a good spot for families?
Yes, kids are welcome! Eden on the Bay is very kid-friendly. You can even bring along some toys or bikes for them to play with while you wait for your food!
It sounds awesome but I always thought Moyo was expensive?
Fair enough, it is more expensive than some of the other places in Blouberg. But the food’s good and the drinks are great – so it’s not too big of a difference if you’re just keen for a drink or two. Hope this helps!
Heita
Thank you for the fab post about moyo Blouberg situated at Eden on the Bay in the beautiful Western Cape (South Africa of course) .. and yes, the 20 minute drive from Cape Town is definitely worth it even if just for the stunning ocean and mountain view and delicious cocktails 🙂
’till we meet again (soon I hope)
I’m glad to see you also enjoy Moyo! It’s always a nice spot to chill out with a cocktail and enjoy the view! Happy travels!
Really cool bar, awesome pics
Thanks, Craig! You should definitely check it out!
